How Can I Tell If My Suspension is Bad?

February 7th, 2020 by

It is a pretty satisfying feeling to fix something yourself. Whether it is fixing some faulty pipes in your kitchen or something wrong in your car, rolling up your sleeves and getting the job done yourself is a source of pride. The only problem is identifying what the problem is first.

There are a lot of different problems that can crop up when you own a vehicle. It can be hard to nail down what an issue might be, but there are always things to look for. Living out in Mesa with all the off-road trails, one problem we often see is suspension systems going bad. Rough terrain can wear out the shocks, so what should you look out for?

Common Signs of Suspension Problems
The suspension system in any car or truck is designed to even out the ride so you don’t get bumped and jostled all around. If you are getting rocked on every bump, then it might be time for new struts. An easy test you can do is to put all of your weight on the front of your truck when it is parked. Once you let go, keep an eye on how it bounces and if it bounces more than three times then it’s time to replace those struts.

If you see a corner of your car or truck leaning or sitting low, then that can also be a sign of damaged or worn struts. Pushing on the trunk and listening for a creaking or squealing sound is a quick way to try and diagnose any problems. There are some other things that could be suspension problems or something else. A car pulling to one side might be a suspension problem or it could be an uneven or underinflated tire.
