Since being rebranded under the RAM badge in 2010, the RAM truck line has earned multiple awards. For instance, RAM trucks have earned five Truck of the Year awards from automotive publication MotorTrend. It’s safe to say that RAM is doing something right with their trucks. So, if you’re looking for a heavy-duty truck that can take punishment and still pull almost 20,000 lbs, the RAM 2500 is for you. Let’s take a look at some recent generation models so you can see which is right for you.
The third-generation RAM 2500 saw many changes in its production run, but it ended with three different engines: a 5.7L HEMI V8, a 6.4L Heavy Duty HEMI V8, and a 6.7L Cummins Turbodiesel I6. The 5.7L Hemi produced 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 6.4L HEMI was even more impressive, with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The turbodiesel was also great, with 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. All options are worth considering.
4th-gen RAM 2500 (2019-Present)
The current RAM 2500 has doubled down on improving capability over the previous generation. It has two engines to choose from: the trusty 6.4L HEMI V8 and an improved 6.7L Cummins Turbodiesel I6. The new 6.4L HEMI V8 still pumps out 410 horses and 429 lb-ft of torque, with a max towing capacity of 17,540 lbs. The 6.7L Cummins is stronger than ever, clocking in at 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, with a max towing capacity of 19,860 lbs.
