While the F-150 is iconic and an excellent truck, sometimes it just can’t cut it. If you find yourself needing more power than the F-150 can put out, then a used F-250 might just be the thing you need. Dubbed the Super Duty, the F-250 increases horsepower, torque, and towing capacity over its smaller F-150 sibling. Take a look below to see which of the most recent F-250 generations will be a better fit for you.
The third-generation F-250 was a big step up from the previous generation with more powerful engines and more capability. It featured a 6.2L V8 and a 6.7L PowerStroke turbodiesel V8. The 6.2L V8 put out 385 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. In the last two years of production, the 6.7L turbodiesel produced 440 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque. The 3rd-gen F-250 came in four different trims: XL, XLT, Lariat, and King Ranch.
The F-250 is currently in its fourth generation. It has the same two main engine options as the 3rd-gen F-250, but with significant upgrades. The new 6.2L V8 produces 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The new 6.7L turbodiesel currently pumps out 475 horses and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The 4th-gen 2020 F-250 has a max towing capacity of 22,800 lbs when properly equipped. The available trailer tow camera system and pro trailer backup assist make hooking up and towing easier and safer than ever before.
