Are Skid Plates Necessary to Go Off-Road?

There are a lot of important things you need to have to go off-roading. It’s not just putting a new pair of tires on your truck or SUV and hoping for the best. Of course, you don’t need to have an entirely custom vehicle to go off-roading either.

So, what sort of equipment is the most important? Obviously, a good set of tires will help, but there are a few other things you should think about. You are likely going to want a strong engine to power you over some of the tougher obstacles. Have you stopped to think about protecting the underside of your car?

What are Skid Plates?

The undercarriage of your car can be vulnerable when you go off-road. All it takes is one bad bump to do some serious damage to your vehicle. Sharp rocks could hit your fuel tank or other vital parts that rest on the underside of your car. Most vehicles that were made to go off-road come with skid plates. A skid plate is just a sheet of metal that reinforces and protects the vital parts of your vehicle.

You can add skid plates on to your vehicle if it didn’t come with them. It can be an easy and affordable way to protect your vehicle and avoid major repairs. Skid plates can offer more than just protection though. They tend to lay flat which means it can improve your vehicle’s aerodynamics a bit to give you a better and more efficient ride. The effect is slight, but it is there.
